From Chapter Six, page 71:
Ramon Barreto had slit his tongue and lips while trying to taste the inside of Merced de Papel; he left a puddle of blackening red between her thighs. He ran from the bedroom, through the den, and out to the back deck that overlooked the Hollywood hills. He let his tongue drip on the wood planks until Merced pulled down her dress, walked outside, and helped him wrap his tongue in gauze. The paper cut was so deep that he could not taste the rusty flavor of his own blood.
