Artist Statement:
These 7 Songs of Praise for The Magdalene are a musical tribute to the historical and mythological character that has in the last decade been the axis of my literary and musical production. The musical seed of this musical project is the marian devotion of salves as practiced in the Dominican Republic, aguinaldos in Puerto Rico and the songs of the Feast of the Cross in both countries. The conceptual seed of this CD is a paralell marian devotion: the one I feel for the other Mary, The Magdalene.

Raquel Z. Rivera & Ojos de Sofía :
Director and singer/songwriter Raquel Z. Rivera is also an accomplished author with a Ph.D. in Sociology. She writes deceptively simple songs richly layered in imagery and symbolism, which she delivers in a distinct earthy voice that is as tender as it is haunting. Ojos de Sofía is a powerhouse team featuring guitarists and cuatristas Bryan Vargas and Alejandro Negrón; pianist Desmar Guevara; guitarist Yasser Tejeda; vocalists Catarina Dos Santos and Sandra García Rivera; bassist Juan Carlos Acosta; and percussionists Juan Gutiérrez, Obanilú Iré Allende Solana, Joan D’león-Metz and Abraham Encarnación.

I'm in love with the project created by Raquel Z. Rivera & Ojos de Sofía. The 7 Songs of Praise for The Magdalene transport me to a familiar place. They are enigmatic and distant, close and profound. Creators of a powerful balance between pain and strength. Uplifting, clear and refreshing. They make me want to dance close to myself, and celebrate!
